Predator: Badlands represents a bold reinvention of the Predator franchise, flipping the script by making the Predator itself the protagonist, rather than the antagonist. Directed by Dan Trachtenberg, known for Prey (2022), and co-written with Patrick Aison, this standalone chapter is set on the Predator home-world. The narrative centers on Dek, a young Yautja who has been ostracized for being smaller—an alleged “runt” among the warriors. Dek’s relentless drive leads him into remote, monstrous territories in search of worthy prey and the ultimate adversary.
Joining Dek on this savage and emotional odyssey is Thia, an advanced android created by the notorious Weyland-Yutani Corporation—a direct nod to the Alien universe and a rare cross-franchise Easter egg. She brings both savviness and vulnerability to their uneasy alliance. Together, they navigate hostile landscapes, face deadly creatures (including man-eating flora and flying beasts), and explore themes of identity, belonging, and survival.
Technically, Predator: Badlands pushes visual storytelling further than ever. Dek’s character combines creature costume design from Studio Gillis, subtle emotional expressions via digital facial motion capture, and practical effects enabled by Wētā Workshop. The Predator language, freshly crafted by the linguist behind Avatar’s Na’vi, lends cultural depth and authenticity to Dek’s portrayal.
Thematically inspired by Westerns, Conan the Barbarian, Mad Max 2, The Book of Eli, and the video game Shadow of the Colossus, the film evokes a gritty, mythic tone while grounding emotion in the bond between predator and android.
With lush cinematography, visceral creature encounters, and a daring reimagining of the Predator’s role, Badlands is poised to be one of the most distinctive entries in the franchise. The film also subtly lays groundwork for a potential shared universe with Alien, teasing Easter eggs like Xenomorph and Independence Day–style skulls, and references to Weyland-Yutani.
Debuted at San Diego Comic-Con, the film’s first 15 minutes reportedly left audiences emotionally charged and eager for more.
